Around here, lately...
Things have remained strangely out of sync, now nearly a month (how?) into this new year. There are reasons, of course. And so it goes. Still I am looking forward to that settled-in feeling when at some point the rhythm of our days, and we, slide back into step.
We have had bright sunny days and now biting cold with a bit of snow, though I hear we've had it easy with our dusting, unlike an hour east with their foot and counting. Our stash of wood is holding out quite nicely, and we are (or is it just me?) walking a little slower whenever passing the wood stove these days. Or inventing excuses to head that direction.
The grand schemes of five (almost six!) year olds are many. The latest, a camping castle, complete with hand carved forks and spoons and bowls, has led to an accumulation of sticks under shelter, in waiting. The lists of "when I grow up I'm going to be"s are lengthening by the day, and are truly fantastic. This is what I need to be writing down, I forget so quickly. In the moment, how could I possibly, then a few months from now, it is gone.
The grand schemes of (going on) thirty-five year olds are beginning to find purchase. This year we will (we will) purge this house of stuff: all those things that creep out from the walls and onto the surfaces, under our feet and everywhere I look. It began, suitably unglamorously, in the laundry room, which may now be my favorite room in the house. Small pleasures, indeed. The dining table shortly followed, and it is good.
And finally, it was re-confirmed today that laundry baskets do in fact still make wonderful toys. And robot (including double robot) heads, and astronaut helmets, and of course, transportation.
What's happening around your place lately?

my wee lass loves hanging out in the laundry basket. no pushing required ;-)
ReplyDeleteit took us a while to find our rhythm but we did and it's been so good. clearly we thrive on rhythm. hope you find yours soon!
They are such wonderful things, aren't they? Years worth of fun to be had :)
DeleteIt seems we are the same age- and we also have five going on six year olds! My five is turning six in February, how about you?
ReplyDeleteIt seems we are :) - though my birthday's not until the Fall. My boys will be six at the end of February, so very close to yours.
DeleteHello Annie,
ReplyDeleteI love the picture of the laundry basket being pushed along your wooden floors - our floors look much the same:)
Thinking of you and hoping things start to feel more in a rhythm soon - although, I think that the going through time is always for a reason.
Warmly, Tonya
Aren't old wooden floors wonderful? Those floors were one of the things that grabbed me when I first stepped into this house.
ReplyDeleteAnd, thank you for the reminder to look for what I can take from this out-of-sync time. You are right, there is sure to be something.
